what if you held an election and nobody came?
well, that's basically what's happening today in san francisco. it's the most boring election i've experience since moving here in 99. others who've lived here longer say it's the most boring election since ever. i keep even forgetting it's happening. the weather's summery which makes it seem less and less like november. this weekend i was out walking precincts handing out flyers and i was wearing shorts. it's almost always cold and nasty when i'm walking precincts so wearing shorts was terrific, but made it feel very strange and unreal. it still doesn't seem like election season. and with that, and the fact that there's very little election challenge going on today for the big ticket items like mayor and district attorney, everyone is predicting that it will be a record low-turnout. which is a shame, but understood considering. i can't even remember about today's election (although of course i'm voting). but if i can't remember it's going on, how are the non-political people going to be energized and excited to make their opinions heard? such a strange phenomenon. that said, i do encourage everyone to utilize their vote today. and 2008 will be a frenetic year full of elections and politics, so get ready.

p.s. new newsletter is up with my aptly titled short column "There Is Still An Election, People"
