hooray for 90 years of women voting in the United States! the 19th amendment to the constitution was formally ratified on August 26, 1920
what i don't understand from all the media this last year is the lack of stories about the revolt WITHIN the republican party. incumbents and party regulars are falling away in stunning upsets against 'tea party' insurgents who have never ran for office before but basing their campaigns on insane, far-right ideology. the soul of the republican party is being fought over and changing and while all the media and the party talks up the excitement over the republican party and the big wins it will probably win this fall, what they don't talk about is how angry many of the establishment republicans must be in regards to outsiders taking over their own party. while in the short run this may be exciting for their party, it will undoubtedly lead to more and more moderate and independent-type republicans leaving the party in the long run. witness the governor of florida charlie crist leaving the party earlier this year because he could not win the primary for senate in his state anylonger. dems will lose many races this fall, but the future is not with the republican party as it surges more and more fanatically right wing.

it's very simple. i do not like extreme heat. last night's attempt to sleep in the sf heatwave was unbearable and disgusting. thankfully our little heatwave is going away today, as we can all pray and hope. 95 degrees in sf is not allowable! 80 degrees at night with tiny fans in my apartment is unbearable. can't wait for the fog to roll back in.

yay! my pre-order of the new dvd collection of the 13th season of the simpsons arrived. i know what i'm doing for the next few days at home. except that i have no air conditioning at home so we'll have to see how much i want to be stuck to my leatherish chair sweating with this couple days of heatwave here in sf. it should never be 95 degrees in san francisco. come back fog!

Grandma's doing "great!" she went to church yesterday, been walking around the house, and up and down the one stair in the garage, taking less and less pain pills, and feeling much much better. :-)

fascinating detailed look-back at political changes following these random horrific crashes. i was especially moved in 2000 when my beloved governor mel carnahan was killed just weeks before his defeat of the horrendous ashcroft. here's actually a link back to one of my writings in 2000 about his death...

just got off the phone with Grandma (Rosetta) who is doing wonderfully well. she's doing 'great!' according to her and according to my mom she's 'beaming'. she's in no pain today and keeps raising her arms up and saying "i'm in no pain!" (of course the morphine's helping with that but it's wonderful to hear she's in no pain for once). but all is going incredibly well. hooray!

re-listening to Heart's 1987 album 'Bad Animals' (one of my youthful favs) after, geez, decades and realizing I still know all the lyrics by heart (or at least what I thought were the lyrics when I sang along ohsolongago)

seriously, this is my new favorite radio station to listen to at home: bird song radio. it's the most peaceful relaxing thing. and i love peace and relaxation. my grandma would love it if she had the internet.
p.s. and yes i get the irony of following up my last post about loving Joan Jett with relaxing bird sounds. what can i say? i'm an all around kinda guy.
