i can't watch awards shows. too boring, too long, too annoying, too stupid, too many lame jokes, and i can just read about it in the morning. so that's what i do. but i did watch a bit of last night's oscars, if only to see Melissa Etheridge sing and then win. unfortunately, they weren't at the same time, so i had to keep flipping back to the awards show while doing other things, but happily i got to see both. and what a treat. she kissed her wife, she thanked her wife and kids, and then everyone moved on. totally regular normal stuff. as it should be. but obviously we've not seen that before in that type of situation. and 11 billion people saw that. and the news today doesn't even mention it because it's not important. and that's just it. it's not important and it is important at the same time. it's not important because it should be just as every other winner thanking their spouse and kissing them. but it is important because we rarely get to see people so openly queer in public, let alone on television, being so openly queer. and 11 billion people never get to see such obviously simple, yet loving and normal, relationships outside of hanging out at a gay bar somewhere in the world. let's hear it for Melissa today. she's my current favorite hero. i'm listening to her on my ipod all day today

our little story made the front page of the examiner today. the big bold headline read: "Leno, Migden, in Showdown for the state Senate ". pretty wild

the usual, example # 579, 385
a new friend kindly invited me to his swanky condo apartment yesterday on a beautiful san francisco day
we went to his outdoor jacuzzi
we wore bathrobes over our swimwear
it was a little cold out
but the water was warm and inviting
i loved the bathrobes!
so warm and welcoming too
and they had big deep pockets
i put my cell phone in one and it dangled lightly and it was fun
the water was warm
we stayed in for about 20 minutes
and chatted
no one else was around
we chatted
and enjoyed
i can't really do hot tubs or saunas or jacuzzis for too long
i get too hot
too overly hot
even though it was nice
so we got out eventually
dried off
put my shirt back on
and then happily pulled the robe around my body to warm myself back up
then...
the usual happened
everything's going well and beautiful and fun
but
i forgot my cell phone was in the pocket of the robe
and it came flying out as i pulled my robe on over my shoulder
and slid right into the jacuzzi
plunk
omg (as my niece would say, OMG!)
i quickly stepped into the jacuzzi
and grabbed it
soaking my shirt and robe and towel
so now i was wet all over
and my phone was making these strange vibrating noises
and now my phone won't stop making those strange vibrating noises
i think it's dead
it's dead
i know
anyway, i have to go replace it today
so if you've called me in the last day or two,
well, that's what's happened
and if you haven't
well
you should have
cuz at least now you have an excuse for why i didn't return the call
anyway
phone's dead
my jacuzzi moment, so rare and fun, turned to the usual self-destructive embarassment
but it's ok
we move on...

Fixed!
Fixed!
When I was visiting my parents during Christmas, this button was missing in action. This is the button that allows for people to walk across the highway and, without it, the walk light never turned on and we had to run across. But during the interim between my trips back here to KC, I called the department of public works and told them about it. And I'm pleased to see that upon my return today, the button is there and it works! Yay for things working out!

i HATE flying
i'm only hating it more and more as i get older. it makes me so anxious and nervous.
i have to get on a flight later this afternoon and all i can think about all day is just being nervous about the flight and wishing it was over.
thankfully i have my xanax to calm my nerves... if only i could take one now and sleep through this whole day. but once i finally get on the plane i'll fall asleep and eventually wake up in kansas city late tonight and forget that any of this happened.
until i have to fly again on monday to return...
